Job Title: Infection Control Nurse (Infection Preventionist)
Job Summary:
The Infection Control Nurse, also known as the Infection Preventionist, is responsible for overseeing and implementing infection control policies and procedures in healthcare settings, with the aim of preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases. They collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure compliance with best practices and maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Through surveillance, education, and expertise, the Infection Control Nurse plays a crucial role in minimizing the risks associated with healthcare-associated infections.
Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Develop and maintain infection control policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
2. Conduct surveillance to identify healthcare-associated infections and report any outbreaks or trends to appropriate stakeholders.
3. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement infection prevention strategies.
4. Provide education and training to healthcare personnel on infection control practices, hand hygiene, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.
5. Monitor and audit compliance with infection control policies, and provide feedback and guidance where improvement is needed.
6. Investigate and manage infectious disease outbreaks by conducting thorough epidemiological studies and implementing control measures.
7. Collect, analyze, and interpret data related to infection control, and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.
8. Stay updated on emerging infectious diseases, infection control best practices, and regulatory changes related to infection prevention.
9. Collaborate with hospital administrators and occupational health departments to develop emergency preparedness plans for infectious disease outbreaks.
10. Serve as a resource for healthcare personnel regarding infection control practices, and provide consultation on infection-related issues.
11. Participate in infection control committees and engage in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety.
12. Ensure compliance with sterilization, disinfection, and waste management protocols, as well as safe injection practices within the healthcare facility.
13. Collaborate with environmental services staff to ensure cleanliness and sanitization of patient care areas.
14. Maintain accurate and organized documentation related to infection control activities and investigations.
15. Conduct research studies on infection prevention and control, and disseminate findings through publications or presentations.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
2. Active registered nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
3. Certification in infection control (CIC) or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe.
4. Proven experience in infection control, preferably in a healthcare setting.
5. Strong knowledge of infectious diseases, epidemiology, and infection control guidelines.
6. Ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and draw conclusions for decision-making.
7. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively educate and train healthcare personnel.
8. Proficient in using computer software applications, databases, and electronic medical records.
9. Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
10. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
11. Knowledge of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards related to infection control.
